Thursday night we took Dash up to my parents house so they could watch him for the weekend and planned to grab a quick bite to eat with them while we were there. On our way up, Jason noticed that his car felt weird and we got as far as MACC before we pulled off... Yup. It was the transmission. Mom picked us up and Jason began the search for a wrecker company to come get his car.
Please note that this is not Jason, not Jason's car, and our car didn't smoke like this! :)

Strangely enough, we had already planned to take a rental car to the beach because we knew that at some point Jason's car was going to break down and mine has an oil leak... so LUCKILY that was already taken care of. But what a huge damper on the beginning of our getaway! Friday morning I had to work so I dropped Jason off at the car rental place and headed in early to do a few reports. I worked hard to get everything done and was able to leave work at 10:30! I flew home, we packed up the rental and hit the road.

Anyone who has been on a long car trip lately can probably attest to the fact that audiobooks are the way to go! Jason picked up a book called The Last Lecture at the library and it kept us occupied for a little over 4 hours of our ~8 hour drive. We started and stopped it several times (to listen to traffic updates, talk, or call friends/parents) and finished it just as we were pulling into the Amelia Island Plantation. Once we checked in we drove through the plantation until we got to where we were staying: the Amelia Inn and Beach Club. We threw our stuff down, gawked at the amazing view from our balcony...
...and then jumped back in the car to get some dinner - we were starving. We decided to go to Slider's Seaside Grill which was about 10-15 minutes from the plantation. The atmosphere was great: live music, lots of people, an amazing outdoor eating area, but the food was...mediocre. Still, we were full and happy and headed back to the room to get a good night's sleep for our first full day!
Check back for Part 2 of our fabulous weekend. :)
