After being greatly inspired, I have decided to try my hand at gardening this year! Kim talked about her experience with "square foot gardening" and I thought "hey - that looks easy enough, maybe I can do that!"
Below is my planned layout for two small (2' x 3') raised beds:
We ate our weight in zucchini last year and are so excited about the prospect of having it readily available in our own back yard. And I could eat cukes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so that's a no brainer too.
We originally wanted to clear a spot (clear from the killer ivy, that is) in the backyard, but realized that it doesn't get much sun at all, and not until the afternoon (instead of morning sun, which is apparently the best kind). After reading through some of the square foot gardening website, I decided it would be just as easy (if not easier) to build raised beds and have them on our patio! This way they are right outside the kitchen and we would pass them every day on our way in.
My dad has an amazing garden - hopefully somewhere deep down inside, I have a green thumb too!
Anyone else getting anxious for Spring?
Very cool! I'm so glad you are planning to garden this year. Have you read "Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew? It's a must read and will give you all the info about each plant, how to grow it, how many in a foot, etc. It's fab.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like most of your choices (Besides strawberries) will grow up a trellis. Those are so handy. I loved keeping all the cucumbers and pumpkins out of the way. =)
Matt and I really want to plant a garden once we get settled in. I'm so glad you posted this! I'll have to check out square foot gardening!
