I'm Telling On Myself

Yeesh. I can't believe I'm going to tell you this. But it was either blog about it or risk Jason putting it on Facebook. For some reason, this seemed the lesser of two evils. :)

Remember last November when we got a new dishwasher?

Well, apparently, when I realized they were coming to install it, I knew I wouldn't have time to run a load of dishes first... so I took a garbage bag and put the dirty dishes in it and set it in the corner of the kitchen, knowing that later that day, I would re-load the NEW dishwasher and all would be grand.

You know where this is going, right?

Jason just found that bag. Of dirty dishes. In the corner. Of the kitchen.

OH THE HUMANITY!!!! At first I gasped - shocked at the fact that I could have EVER forgotten to do something so important!!

But ever since then, I've just been laughing.

Because come on - what else can you do but laugh at year old dirty dishes?

"Oh, THERE'S the whisk...."

Here's hoping you have a story to top mine. :)

Baby Lawhorn {Week 8} - 500th Post!!

Wow. So I'm 8 weeks pregnant. That still blows my mind every time I think about it.

{I thought I would tell you what's going on right now and in the coming weeks, I'll post about when we found out, how we told our family & friends, etc.}
Your baby is growing like mad, putting on about a millimeter every day and
continuing to straighten out in the trunk. Though you can't feel it yet, baby is moving
those little arms, legs and (now only slightly) webbed fingers and toes like crazy.
Symptoms
I have been exhausted. Completely exhausted! I try to head for bed by 9 o'clock every night now - sometimes earlier! This was one of the things that keyed me into the fact that something was "off" about me... I told Jason about a week before we found out, that I thought I may have mono because I could not shake how tired I was all. the. time. Once we found out, it was like ooooooh - that makes sense! But yeah, this has made even the most simple tasks a challenge. Loading and unloading the dishwasher - whew! I'm pooped! Moving wet clothes from the washer to the dryer - I NEED A NAP!

The other major thing I'm dealing with is hunger. I will be totally fine and then all of a sudden, I'm starving! No signs. No warning. Just an empty, hollowness that has to be filled immediately. :)

Cravings
I'm not really having any cravings, per se.. just things that are "fast". Take instant mashed potatoes, for example. :) I have never EVER made instant potatoes before - it is an unspoken sin at the Guin house, but I decided to grab a packet and my oh my. Cheesy potato goodness in like 2 minutes! Definite instant gratification for those times when the baby says I'M HUNGRY NOOOOOOW!

Missing
I don't drink coffee, so I haven't had to give that up. I switched all my hot tea to decaf (Constant Comment is my fave right now). I typically drink water when we go out to eat, but there have been a few times I've ordered or sipped on Dr. Pepper or Cherry Coke. Mmmmm... But no worries - sips of caffeine will not hurt Baby Lawhorn. :)

Well, that's where I am right now! I will keep you updated as things change!!

My First 5K

Well, I'm alive, my friends. I made it through my VERY FIRST 5K!

I didn't bring my camera with me, but I made Jason grab this quick shot about 20 minutes before the race:
Mmmm... yes, I definitely looked pumped up.

Anyway, I was armed with some rockin' tunes and a pair of black tights (dude, it was chilly). The first song that played when I first started running (I had it on shuffle) was Gimme Some Lovin' which I had originally downloaded for our wedding! It was a fun song to get me going, and before I knew it, I passed Jason! Okay, no, I didn't pass him UP - he had already hit the halfway point and was coming back and I passed him then.

Anyway, he finished 10 minutes before me and so he came back to finish with me! It was awesome to see him coming towards me and gave me the last little boost I needed to finish! (That and the Group 1 Crew song Walking on the Stars!)

My final time was 39min and 16sec! UNDER 40 minutes!! Whoo hoo!

I also got to see all these fabulous girls!
(By the way, they totally should have won for best team costume. Just sayin'.)

I'm really glad I did it...
...but I ain't never gonna do it again!

Dear Weekend,

Dear Weekend,

You don't have to come yet if you don't want to.

Ya know why? Because of this.

This thing that I was sooooooo excited about and ready for and couldn't wait to do? (then freaked out?) Yeah, remember that? That thing is this Saturday. As in... tomorrow.

By the way, I'm 8 weeks pregnant.
(Don't worry, my doctor said it was completely fine for me to do the 5K this weekend - even if I wish she had told me no.)

So tomorrow morning, I will get up, get ready, pack my fully charged iPod complete with motivational songs, and do my best to cross the finish line sometime before they start closing the thing down.

Please pray.

Love,
Sarah

Christmas Cards - Shutterfly

Remember last year's Christmas cards? Yeah, that didn't turn out so well. This year I wanted to get a little bit of a head start so that I don't run into any disasters!

You all know that I'm a big fan of Shutterfly. Last Christmas I created an "Our First Christmas" book and had it printed through Shutterfly. It turned out soooooo well, and I know we will treasure it for years to come. Then this summer I created a SUPER LONG book chronicling our Canada trip in August! We kept one book for ourselves and gave one to Jason's parents as a souvenir. Another fabulous book we will cherish.

This year, I am looking to Shutterfly for our Christmas cards. I have already found some ADORABLE ones!!!

We are going to have a little photo shoot this weekend with the fabulous Becca from Becca Photography! And THEN I will be all over this whole Christmas card thing!

And guess what? If you are a blogger, you have the chance to get 50 free holiday cards from Shutterfly!! Sign up here: http://bit.ly/sfly2010

Are you sending Christmas cards this year?

Beef Stroganoff - Improvised

Now that I have fully satisfied your hunger for football, I wanted to share with you what we had for dinner last night.

Let me just start by saying I rarely use cookbooks. It's just so simple to search for something on the internet, that I typically get my recipes online. Last night was no exception. I knew we had beef that we needed to use, but I didn't know what to make. I also REALLY didn't want to stop at the store.

I don't know about you but when I search for a recipe, I always go ahead and throw "easy" in front of whatever I'm searching for. Because, well... the alternative is hard. And I don't do hard.

So I searched for "Easy Beef Stroganoff" and find this recipe from allrecipes.com. Okay, I can work with this - beef, noodles, sour cream, beef broth, flour... I got this stuff. Now, granted, I didn't have egg noodles (which would have made this dish better, in my opinion), and I didn't have beef broth readily available. However, I always keep a little jar of beef boullion and chicken bouillon so all I had to do was boil 1 cup of water and add a beef bull. cube.

My modified and improvised version is below:
Ingredients
1/2 box noodles, cooked and drained {I used rotini b/c I had it, but egg noodles would have been YUMMY}
2 tablespoons butter
spoonful of minced garlic {blue lid, got it at WM in the veggie section}
1 pound lean ground beef
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup beef broth {1c water and 1 beef boullion cube}
1/2 cup sour cream
"dash" of worcestershire sauce
"splash" of milk to make more sauce {if necessary}

Directions
*Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook noodles in boiling water until done, about 8 minutes. Drain.
*In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat, add garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes.
*Using the same pan, melt remaining butter. Cook ground beef in melted butter until browned.
*Mix in flour. Stir in beef broth, and cook until slightly thickened. Stir in sour cream. Add dash of worcestershire for additional flavor.
*Continue cooking until sauce is hot, but not boiling. {If necessary, add splash of milk to make more sauce, or if you're reheating it later.} Serve sauce over noodles.

Dude, this was reallllllly yummy. Lots of flavor! We just served it with green beans {which I also add a cube of beef boullion to to give them more flavor} but I should have made mashed potatoes to go with it too. Mmmmm... mashed potatoes. Anyway, we will definitely have this again!

Sarah's Guide to Football - Downs

***UPDATED BELOW***
I may regret posting this, because I'm sure so many of you know WAY more about football than I do. Which is fine - it's great, actually, because you can correct me if I say something stupid.

HOWEVER, there are some of you who don't know the first thing about football, which is where I was 5 years ago when I met Jason.

Can you even believe that I was a cheerleader for SIX years and I never understood "downs" in football? I knew 1st down was "good" and I should cheer, and of course I knew I should cheer when we scored.

Wow. That's even more embarassing to write than it was to think.

What I realized was that no one ever took the time to teach me, or if they tried, it was usually someone who spoke "football" and well... I spoke cheerleading.

Moving on....

When I met Jason, on our second date we went to my very first Tennessee football game and he slowly and simply answered all my questions. And now I'm going to try to explain downs to those of you who don't get football:
  • The offense (team with the ball) gets four tries to move 10 yards forward. They can run the ball or pass the ball, but their goal is to move 10 yards forward, while the defense tries to keep them from doing this.
  • When it is 1st and 10, that means this is their first try. Let's say they pass and it's incomplete, they will have to start at the same point, but now it's 2nd down, so they say it is 2nd and 10 - "their 2nd try with 10 yards to go".
  • They try again to move forward, and maybe they get 4 yards (out of the 10, so they still have 6 yards left), so then it is 3rd and 6. They are on their THIRD try and now they have 6 yards to go.
  • So on 3rd down, let's just say they're doing great and the get those 6 yards! WHOO HOO!! This means it is now 1st and 10 again. They are 10 yards farther down the field (closer to scoring a touchdown) and the 4 tries (downs) start again. {This is when the officials "move the chains" which show where the new 10 yards begin and end.}
  • If on 3rd down, they weren't able to get the last 6 yards, they would kick the ball to the opposing team, and "lose their turn" in a sense. Whereas, if they get the 6 yards, they "keep their turn" and get to keep trying to move forward to get a touchdown.
  • ***EDITED TO ADD: I realized I didn't exactly explain 4th down (thanks honey!). Okay, let's say that on the 3rd down, they got it almost all the way, so there is 1 yard left. If it is 4th and 1, a lot of times, the offense will "go for it" and try to push through to get that last yard. But, if they have more than a couple yards to go, then they will punt it from wherever they are on the field to the other team, and when the other team catches it, they try to run as far as they can before the defense (the ones who were just on offense) can stop them. Then the whole thing starts over with the previous defense now as offense.
Alright. Anyone still with me? Was that too complicated? It's exactly how I would try to explain it to you if you were at my house watching football with us. If you asked, that is.

I'm just saving you the hassle of asking. :)

Questions? Comments? Anyone even care? :)

Mr. Roscoe

The weekend of Halloween, we were up at my parent's house and we got to hang out with THIS little guy!!
my family's new kitty, Roscoe!!

nervous about that furry creature (Dash) running around on the deck

Dad say's "It's okay, Roscoe - Dash is more scared of you than you are of him!"

He is soooooo precious and cuddly and lovable!
(He's just not quite sure about Dash.)
